‘Catch a Breath’ in one of four cosy cocoons set to appear in Fitzgerald’s Park

They’ll be installed just before St Patrick’s Day.
Visitors to Fitzgerald’s Park will be invited to experience a moment of reflection in a cosy ‘cocoon’ designed by a Cork-based artist later this month.
Sample-Studios presents a new solo exhibition by Catarina Araújo in The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion, and the Cork Public Museum, Fitzgerald’s Park, from March 16th to April 22nd, 2023.
An immersive and interactive sculptural exhibition arising from a socially engaged practice with mental health professionals based in Cork City, ‘Cocooning – Catch a Breath’ is an art project, designed to understand the impacts of Covid-19 on the mental health sector.
Four ‘Cocoons’ – physical structures designed in collaboration with four mental-health practitioners, will be on display.

“During the research period for the project, one word that struck Araújo throughout meetings and conversations with the mental health professionals involved was ‘cocoon’.” a spokesperson from Sample Studios told us.
“Cocoons came to be associated with a mode of expression – and also as a state of being that was being imposed on people by the State during Covid_19 lockdowns.”
A Portuguese Cork-based artist, Araújo recently completed 15 months of an artist residency with Sample-Studios as part of The Radical Institute Studios of Sanctuary programme for socially engaged artists from an asylum seeker, refugee or migrant background.
As an artist, she aims to expand the field between art and mental health, where artistic approaches are a central tool to explore new methods to find sustainability in life.
The exhibition will run until April 22nd and will open Tuesday – Saturday, 11am to 4pm in The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion and The Cork Public Museum in Fitzgerald’s Park.
