Barryscourt Castle reopens this weekend following a major conservation project

By Yay Cork April 25, 2025

It reopens on Saturday, April 26th.

This weekend, history buffs (and the just-plain-curious) can check out the newly restored Barryscourt Castle in Carrigtwohill, one of the finest examples of a late medieval Irish tower house.

The property, built between 1392 and 1420 during the reign of 7th Lord Barry, John Ciotach Barry, has been extensively restored by the OPW, which oversaw the repointing of over 17km of stone façade by hand.

Inside, the Main Hall and Great Hall have been completed and fittings and furnishings reinstated. Within the Castle grounds, the herb and knot garden and the charming orchard have also been restored to their original sixteenth century design.

Visiting Barryscourt Castle

A shuttle bus service from Carrigtwohill Railway Station will operate during certain periods throughout the 2025 season, allowing visitors from Cork City and beyond to reach Barryscourt Castle. Iarnród Éireann has provided a dedicated pick-up and drop-off area for added convenience.

To celebrate the reopening, admission will be free for the 2025 season with a variety of heritage talks, guided walks, and special events planned too, starting with a weekend of performance and talks on June 14th and 15th, 2025.

“As a proud Cork native, I am delighted to see Barryscourt Castle, a landmark of our county’s rich history, conserved to its former glory.” said Taoiseach Micheál Martin, speaking at the launch of the venue.

“This castle holds a special place in Cork’s heritage, and its reopening is a moment of pride for the region. The OPW’s investment ensures that future generations can experience and appreciate the fascinating story of Barryscourt. Beyond its historical significance, this project will also enhance tourism and cultural life in Cork, drawing visitors from across Ireland and beyond, and providing lasting benefits to the area”.
