No travel for 400,000 Irish people who have only had one dose of AstraZeneca

Disappointing news for those on the AstraZeneca.
The HSE has confirmed that those waiting on a second dose of the AstraZeneca are not eligible for international travel when it reopens on July 19th.
Over one million Irish people, particularly those over the age of 60, have received at least one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
While there are certain privileges afforded to those who’ve had one dose, including welcoming other vaccinated people over for home visits, there are now special provisions for international travel.
The reason for the decision is likely tied in to the emergence of the Delta variant from India. One shot of the AZ vaccine is only 33% effective against this strain, the second shot provides cover of 92%.
The AstraZeneca vaccine has repeatedly been the subject of controversy during the global vaccine rollout, with questions raised as to its efficacy, as well as supply issues which have affected the EU and Ireland.
This lack of supply forced Ireland to extend the waiting periods between first and second shot for many, something that will cause even further irritation now that it is confirmed travel is limited to those who have had both shots.
