Every stylist has a clever trick or two up her tailored sleeve.
And Opera Lane’s new resident fashion maven Breeda O’Connell has plenty of them to share, from key trends to add to your wardrobe to the simple and inexpensive tweaks that will swiftly elevate any look.
Her favourite anyone-can-do-it, DIY tip? A printed scarf.
“The easiest and quickest way to elevate the simplest of outfits, look for a scarf with pops of colour that ‘links’ to something else in your outfit, or choose, for example, an animal print scarf with an all-black outfit. A scarf is a great way to ensure there is some colour near your face, and you can showcase your style personality in the print and colours you choose.” says Breeda.
Here’s how to do it: “Choose a faux silk scarf to tie around your neck, in your hair, or on your bag; or choose a longer line scarf, which looks very chic worn long over your wool coat or blazer, tucked neatly under the jacket lapels.
“You can also wear your scarf wide as a wrap over your coat for some drama, or wrap around your neck in a cowl effect – there are endless ways to totally transform your outfit!”
Why work with a stylist?
“Many women will come to me having been through some change, or period of challenge in their life. That might be having had a baby, or overcoming an illness, or starting a new job, or losing a loved one.” says Breeda.

“In these seasons, life takes over and we lose sight of ourselves; clothes and style slip down the priority list. When you feel ready to get back to yourself again, that’s a great time to work with a stylist.
“Another ideal time is at the change of the seasons when you’re wanting to add essential pieces to your wardrobe, and maybe make those investment buys.”
