The New Year is for trying something different.
If you know someone who is seeking a fresh challenge for 2021, now you can gift them a voucher to learn the art of stone carving – a skill that will literally last a lifetime.
Tommy Lysaght will be offering weekend workshops to small groups, suitable for first-time carvers as well as improvers, at Tracton Arts Centre in January.
Participants will be guided through the full process of selecting an appropriate stone, creating and transferring a design, and will learn basic carving techniques.
Traditional methods and tools will be explored while getting to know a small group of fellow-carvers in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere, with the satisfaction of learning a new skill and creating a piece to take home.
“I love to see the confidence that grows when people begin working with stone,” Tommy told Yay Cork.
“Some people come in saying they ‘can’t draw a straight line’, or that they’re ‘not creative,’ and yet everyone leaves having created a unique piece. People get hooked!
“I really believe that carving is for everyone, regardless of our age, ability, or background. Stone carving is probably one of the earliest human art forms and is part of our cultural heritage, from ogham stones to Newgrange, to church art. It’s in us.”
All tools and materials will be provided, along with a selection of stone to work with and templates to explore. Depending on the vision for their piece, participants may complete a bas relief, or a more abstract sculptural piece, or will be advised on the completion of more ambitious pieces at home.
The workshops will be held at the beautiful Tracton Arts Centre in Minane Bridge, half an hour from Cork city, 10 minutes from Carrigaline and 15 minutes from Kinsale.
There will be a choice of two weekends, beginning with an opening session on Friday evenings, followed by two days of carving. The first weekend will be held from January 29th to 31st, if Covid restrictions allow. Otherwise, the next available date will be arranged.
The cost for the weekend, including all tools, materials, and refreshments is €200 and you can book in or buy a voucher here.
