A photographer collects images of Cork’s most beautiful abandoned doors and staircases

The keys were lost long ago.
But one Cork photojournalist has made sure that the spectacular doors in many of Cork’s decaying mansions are not forgotten forever.
The @abandoned_westcork Instagram account is one of our favourite feeds for virtually exploring the abandoned halls of the county’s eerie convents, empty schools, former stately homes, cottages and factories.
A quick browse will take you down a rabbit hole of fascinating discoveries and unseen places.
‘Taking only pictures and leaving only footprints’, the anonymous photographer captures unique architecture and pieces of history that are disappearing by the day. Here, @abandoned_westcork shares some of the most spectacular doors and staircases of the past.

ABANDONED DOORS
“I found this post extremely difficult to decide which doors to pick, there were so many to choose from. I’ve narrowed it down to these few, a mixture of my absolute favourites and ones I haven’t posted before.”

ABANDONED STAIRCASES
“I definitely have a soft spot for an abandoned staircase especially a spiral staircase. I had so many to choose from for this post, I’ve added my two favourites and the rest I picked randomly.” – @abandoned_westcork

This collection is a fascinating look at how the design and layout of our bathrooms have (thankfully) changed down through the years.
Keep an eye out for the mysterious floating loo in image 10…
