A local business erected an 18ft Christmas tree in the middle of the River Ilen

You can’t miss it.
West Cork locals got a fun surprise en route to work and school this morning at the sight of an enormous Christmas tree sitting proudly in the middle of the River Ilen.
The 18ft tree on the island opposite Deelish Pier was erected by the team at Deelish Garden Centre, West Cork’s oldest garden centre, to mark its 40th birthday this year.
Staff used kayaks to get out to the spot and decorate the festive fir, complete with ribbons, tinsel and an extra large star on top.
“We hope it puts a smile in your hearts as you drive by!” the Deelish team announced on social media.

“To continue our celebrations of turning 40 years in business this year, making us the oldest garden centre in West Cork, we decided to gift the community a giant Christmas tree in the middle of the River Ilen!
“This makes 4001 trees given away so far this year! The other 4000 were native trees given away at the start of this year to promote native woodland and wildlife habitat.”
You can pick up your own tree (in a more sensible size) at Deelish Garden Centre now.
