8 interesting Cork walks and talks to check out during National Heritage Week

Dust off your comfy shoes.
We love a chance to learn something new while getting some fresh air, especially when it’s free.
This year, from August 17th to 25th, Ireland will delve into its shared past and present through a series of events collectively known as National Heritage Week, with loads of fascinating walks and talks happening around Cork.
This year’s theme, “Connections, Routes, and Networks,” invites the public to explore the intricate bonds that shape Irish society. With over 150 events planned across County Cork alone, attendees can expect a rich tapestry of cultural experiences, from historical tours to contemporary art installations.
Your local library is probably a good place to start; an exclusive screening of the new documentary The Castles of Cork will take place in Bandon Library, with an exhibition on the heritage of local historical buildings in Clonakilty Library, a talk on the life of Annie Moore in Cobh Library, The Ellen Hutchins Display in Bantry Library; and an exhibition of the social history of pubs in Midleton Library.
Here’s a list of walks and talks happening across Cork County:
- West Cork – A guided walk through 4,000 years of the archaeology, history and folklore of Lough Hyne by local historian Terri Kearney of Skibbereen Heritage Centre.
- East Cork – A talk by Tony Harpur about the history of the Market House in Midleton (now Midleton Library).
- Cobh – A writing masterclass conducted by Michael O’Sullivan, exploring themes inspired by the Old Yacht Club, including readings from a selection of his publications at the Sirus Art Centre.
- Carrigaline – The CorkCott project at Minnane Bridge, will share their knowledge on the issues faced by owners of traditionally constructed buildings with respect to costs, energy efficiency, and skill shortages.
- Bandon-Kinsale – Family-friendly events in Charlesfort and the Bandon Walled Town Festival in Bandon, including a medieval re-enactment.
