A Corkman just opened his very own Sir Henry’s… in Perth

By Yay Cork January 24, 2024January 24, 2024

You’d be hard-pressed for a taxi home.

But Cork folk who live in Oz will be thrilled to see a Sir Henry’s nightclub open on their doorstep.

Ian Jeffrey, who is originally from Galway but grew up in Cork, has opened a new venue in Perth, Australia, naming it after the iconic Leeside venue, which closed for good in June, 2003.

Like all good stories, it started with a pint.

“We decided we would make an Irish stout, and chatting about names with my uncle, we decided to name it Sir Henry.”

The stout, which is described as slightly sweeter than Beamish or Murphy’s, won gold in the Perth Beer Awards, sparking a new opportunity for the entrepreneur and his Raunchy Brewing Company.

“The only way to make money in the beer game is to have your own venue,” said Ian, who once worked as a DJ in Cork, working in Rafters.

Together with co-owner Pat Van Brakel and Dave McKee, Sir Henry’s Perth opened on January 19th. Happily, the five-day-a-week music venue sold out in the first week.

Speaking to The Opinionline on Cork’s 96fm, Ian revealed that he used vintage photos to find the original logo for Sir Henry’s and found a graphic designer to use it as inspiration for a suite of new designs for the new bar, which is located in Northbridge’s Lake Street.

Sir Henry’s fans have been getting in touch with Ian to offer him original memorabilia from the famous club and word has it that Cork DJ Stevie G is planning a trip to Perth soon to play a set.

Naturally, they have a copy of Romanthony’s Make This Love Right (known to Cork folk as the Ball and Chain) to get the crowds going on house music nights.
