In West Cork, one small restaurant is making a stand for independent food businesses

We’re all shocked by the recent closures.
And now a popular West Cork restaurant is leading the charge to bring down the VAT rate for the hospitality sector.
Budds in Ballydehob, run by Emma and Jamie Budd, are firing up the call for a reduction from the current 13.5% to a maximum of 9% with an online petition.
“We feel that this is a very realistic approach and one that is hugely important to the survival of small independent businesses within the hospitality sector,” said the restaurant owners.
The foodie gem of sustainability and fresh seasonal produce took to social media, rallying all independent businesses to join forces.
The post has been widely shared across all platforms. “It is becoming untenable to run a small independent business or restaurant because of wage increases, flat rates expenses, and rising costs,” they explained.

The move follows the recent closure of four well-known Cork eateries within days of each other — Pigalle, The Tung Sing, Nash 19, and White Rabbit Bar & BBQ.
The newly launched petition can be signed here and will be sent to relevant players in the government.
