Down West, a little village bands together to restore its crumbling old Station House

By Katie Mythen-Lynch November 21, 2023November 21, 2023

It was once the centre of all the action locally.

But the decades have not been kind to the Ballineen-Enniskeane Station House since the doors closed with the end of the West Cork Railway in 1961.

Now however, there’s hope the Derrigra landmark can be preserved for future generations; the community is rallying together to restore the old building, which has fallen into disrepair, to use it for community events.

The project aims to revive the Station House and preserve its heritage, making it a central space for cultural events and workshops.

“The Station House, a testament to West Cork’s rich heritage, has weathered decades of changing seasons and neglect.” a spokesperson for the group told Yay Cork.

“The signs of time have taken their toll, particularly on the roof, which now bears the scars of neglect and demands prompt repair.”

A donation campaign has begun, with a target of €200,000 – you can donate here.

“While BEDA (Ballineen-Enniskeane Development Association) is calling for donations and sponsorship, the restoration project is not just about refurbishing bricks and mortar.”

“It goes beyond restoration, it is a commitment to creating a vibrant community hub and preserving our legacy for future generations. By reviving the Station House, we can create a space that promotes connections, celebrates our heritage, and supports local initiatives.”
