This group is calling on Cork parents to buy a gift for a child in Direct Provision

By Christina Collins November 11, 2023

Santa visits everyone.

That’s the magic of Christmas and the big man himself; he knows that everyone deserves the simple pleasure of opening a gift on Christmas morning.

But sometimes even Santa needs a little help from the good people of Cork to make this a reality. Inflation is making the delivery of presents fairly pricey these days.

That’s why Saoirse, a cooperative formed by mothers and migrant women living in direct provision centres as well as other local migrants around Cork, are organising a gift-giving initiative and making sure that all kids living in the centres get a gift this Christmas.

“Christmas is the most magical time of year, especially when we have children,” said the group on Instagram, asking parents to consider buying another or donating a similar amount to the group for a child living in Direct Provision.

“Your donation guarantees that they will have a present of their choice this Christmas,” they said.

Saoirse has teamed up with Fáilte Refugees Society at University College Cork (UCC), UCC lecturers, students, and friends who have been organising these charity events every year since direct provision centres existed.

To donate to the group, which is aiming to raise some €10,000 to provide gifts to the 400+ kids who live in the centres, visit their GoFundMe here.
