‘It’s human kindness in action’: Roadshow will offer advice on hosting Ukrainian refugees

By Yay Cork June 19, 2023June 19, 2023

‘It’s hard. It’s true solidarity.’

Over 80,000 displaced Ukrainians have arrived in Ireland since the war started. In the midst of a wider housing crisis, the state has run out of emergency accommodation for new arrivals.

Over 1,100 Ukrainians are living with hosts in Cork and many more are still in need of accommodation. Now Helping Irish Hosts is appealing to Cork residents to come forward to offer a room in their home or a self-contained property, with a nationwide roadshow visiting Midleton this week to answer any questions locals might have about hosting.

The event, happening in Midleton Family Resource Centre on Wednesday, June 21st at 7pm, invites current hosts and anyone interested in hosting to get together for an evening of celebration and information-sharing on what it’s like to host displaced Ukrainians and how to go about it.

The evening will bring together local hosts and their Ukrainian guests to share their experiences, alongside experts from Helping Irish Hosts, NASC and other support organisations who will be on hand to answer questions and provide up-to-date information.

“There are now over 6,000 host homes in Ireland, accommodating more than 10,000 displaced Ukrainians. That is something special.” said Helping Irish Hosts Co-Founder and CEO Angie Gough

“Can you imagine? People who’ve never met, living with each other, sharing kitchens, loos, fridges, ovens, school runs. It’s hard. It’s true solidarity. It’s human kindness in action.

“Hosting is not a long-term solution to the crisis we are in, but hosts and host communities are beating a path to something better – for ALL displaced people – and learning loads about ourselves and each other along the way. Helping Irish Hosts are here to help set hosts up with all the tools you need to host in your home.

“All are welcome to this event; if you are currently hosting please come along to share your experience.”

You can register for this free event here or just show up on the night.
