5 really gorgeous events that are happening during Cork Craft Month ’22

By Yay Cork August 5, 2022August 5, 2022

Brought to you by Cork Craft Month.

The programme gets more intriguing every year.

Cork Craft & Design has unveiled its 2022 line-up for Cork Craft Month, with over 60 workshops, artist talks, markets, and demonstrations taking place in August.

This year sees a number of new cultural organisations join the festival. TEST SITE, which is located on the grounds of a former sawmill on Kyrl’s Quay, will host a range of workshops, talks and outdoor events. There will also be two special live performances from the Fresh Air Collective while bookbinding and ceramic workshops will also take place.

Several events will be presented in Irish, including Sonia Caldwell’s talk on Rush Rattle Weaving as part of the Timpeallacht Exhibition in Kilcoe Studios, Peadar O’Riada’s demonstration of Skep Traditional Beehive Weaving and artist Martha Cashman’s workshop on how to make ceramic bird feeders.

Twelve original illustrations by Cork artist Annie Mar will also be popping up on city billboards, so keep your eyes peeled for a special message as Gaeilge.

Here are just five of the many events we’ll be checking out during the 2022 installment:

1. Watch a Crochet Flower Demonstration in the Peoples Parklet

August 20th, Peoples Parklet, outside Cork Flower Studio, Douglas Street, 2pm to 4pm, FREE

Cork Textiles Network will lead this lovely demo in the idyllic setting of the People’s Parklet on Douglas Street. It’s free to attend and refreshments will be provided.

Tickets are available in-store or by phone on 021 4966510.

2. Try tile making in a city courtyard

August 25th, Wandesford Quay Courtyard, 4pm to 7pm, FREE

Spend some time in the courtyard with artist Bernadette Tuite making your own clay tile as part of Cork Craft
Month. There will be an artist’s demonstration at 4.15pm and 5.30pm. This is a drop-in event but registration is encouraged to guarantee a space. Tickets are available here.

3. Hit the Roundy for an evening of vinyl, crafting, and spoken word

August 16th, The Roundy, 1 Castle St, Cork City, 7pm–9pm, Entry: €6.

Cork Craft Month will host a cosy evening of craft upstairs at the Roundy from 7pm-9pm. Expect a fun mix of craft demos and workshops, spoken word poetry performances, 1960s vinyl records spun by Fionnbharr Reilly and a wool weaving workshop with Orla McCarthy of Loombeam.

4. Spend a morning with Benchspace Cork

Saturday, August 20th, 10am to 2pm, Marina Commercial Park, Centre Park Road (€60)

Join tutor David for a guided making session and go home with a hand-crafted wine or gin valet made from locally sourced hardwood.

5. Shop for treasures at the Made in Cork Market

August 20th, St Peter’s North Main Street

The popular Made in Cork Market is back this year, taking over St Peter’s Cork on August 20th.

Stop by to speak to local makers about their unique craft products with plenty of activities to enjoy and locally made works to purchase.

Cork Craft Month is supported by the Local Enterprise Office, Design & Crafts Council Ireland, Cork City Council, Cork County Council, Cork Education and Training Board, Cork County Council’s Cobh Municipal District, Creative Ireland, and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
