Co-creator of West Cork podcast challenges latest “rumour” in Sophie Toscan du Plantier case

The case remains clouded by rumour and uncertainty.

Scepticism has been raised in response to a claim made by writer Nick Foster, author of Murder at Roaringwater, a 2021 book about the murder of Sophie Toscan to Plantier.

Sam Bungey, one of the creators of the acclaimed West Cork podcast along with Jennifer Forde, has taken to Twitter to comment on new claims made about the Sophie Toscan du Plantier case by Foster.

The Sophie Toscan du Plantier case was blighted early on by rumour and it’s infuriating to watch it happening again. The problem with these things is they get published one place and even if later debunked they're already a part of the lore.

Writing over the weekend, Foster claimed: “Sophie’s assailant was intending to visit a neighbour of #sophietoscanduplantier on the night of the crime, but their lights were out. Then he saw that Sophie’s lights were on. She opened the door to him. He grabbed a bottle of wine in her porch and struck her with it.”

Foster went on to further claim that this information came from a man who had been remanded in an Irish prison during the 2000s, who heard a jailhouse confession in relation to the Toscan du Plantier Murder.

In a thread on Twitter posted this morning, Bungey challenged the claims made by Foster: “I have been in contact for the past few years with the person apparently being referred to here. He says he was told about the wine bottle by a Garda. No-one told him about it as part of a ‘confession.’

“There is a lot more to this man’s story in connection with the investigation into Sophie’s murder, but none of it pertinent to what happened to her. He also says he has never spoken to Nick Foster.”

Bungey added: “The Sophie Toscan du Plantier case was blighted early on by rumour and it’s infuriating to watch it happening again. The problem with these things is they get published one place and even if later debunked they’re already a part of the lore.”
