Cork’s ‘Yogini Granny’ is on a mission to perform a headstand (and it’s for a very good cause)

It’s no easy feat at any age.
But one Crosshaven-based pensioner is determined to perfect a headstand in an effort to raise funds for a charity she believes in.
Eleanor Buckley (66) has enlisted the help of Fabiola at the Sacred Body yoga studio and plans to learn the tricky pose before her 67th birthday in September… all while raising money for the Peter McVerry Trust, a housing and homeless charity committed to reducing homelessness and the harm caused by substance misuse and social disadvantage.
Now known as the Yogini Granny, Eleanor, mum to three sons and a grandmother to two little girls, has been sharing her progress on Instagram, attempting her headstands in various locations along Cork’s coast.

“I am an OAP and I discovered The Peter McVerry Trust was planning on opening an office in Cork.” Eleanor told Yay Cork.
“I decided to set myself a fundraising challenge of standing on my head with the Help of Fabiola @sacredbodystudio. This is my second week and I post my progress every morning on Instagram and Facebook.”
Having felt the benefits of regular yoga practice since 2018, Eleanor believes everyone can benefit from a few simple poses every day:
“Maybe not the headstand but definitely yoga – even simple daily stretches would make a massive difference. Looking at older people in nursing homes, very visible during Covid, I got very upset. It’s all back to mobility and activities of daily living. My background is in public health nursing. I am very aware that many older people are unable to cope with their environment due to poor mobility and have no choice but to go into homes.”
So far, Eleanor’s efforts have raised more than half of her €1,500 target. You can follow her progress on Instagram and help her reach her goal by donating here.
