Is your nose exposed? If so then you’re not wearing your mask properly – Dr Ronan Glynn

By Yay Cork September 1, 2020September 1, 2020

You’d think it would be obvious.

However, it seems there are still people who haven’t quite gotten to grips with mask-wearing just yet and now Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn has stepped in to offer some important pointers.

The gist is this: it’s not enough to bring a mask with you when you head out shopping or socialising – you need to wear it correctly too.

“We’re seeing far too many people walking around with [face coverings] under their chin,” said Dr Glynn.

“We’re seeing many people wearing them, but with their nose exposed. Neither of those things provides any protection and indeed may increase the risk.”

Face coverings are compulsory for customers and staff in all shops and indoor settings in Ireland and, according to the HSE, you may be “fined or refused entry” if you don’t wear one.

“To protect yourself and others from coronavirus (COVID-19), think about how the virus is spread.” says the latest HSE update on the subject.

“Coronavirus is spread in sneeze or cough droplets. To infect you, it has to get from an infected person’s nose or mouth into your eyes, nose or mouth. This can be direct or indirect (on hands, objects, surfaces).

Social distancing reminder

Meanwhile, the HSE has issued a reminder to the public to adhere to social distancing guidelines ever time they leave the house.

“If you are leaving your home today, don’t be afraid to let others know if they get too close.” the HSE tweeted.

If you are leaving your home today, don’t be afraid to let others know if they get too close. Remember 2 metres apart is where we need to be. Don’t forget to remind children when they leave home too #COVID19 pic.twitter.com/Nq8SNayXCJ
