All the tools are provided for this weekend Stone Carving workshop (beginners welcome)

By Katie Mythen-Lynch July 28, 2020July 28, 2020

This would be a cool skill to have.

A beginners workshop in stone carving is taking place in Cork in August and if you’ve ever been curious as to how it all works, this is a rare chance to get stuck in with some expert guidance.

It’s all happening at the Tracton Arts Centre in Minane Bridge, where participants of all ages and backgrounds will be guided through the full process of selecting an appropriate stone, creating and transferring a design, and learning basic carving techniques.

Facilitator Tommy Lysaght, who has been working with stone for over 20 years, will be supporting a small group of fellow-carvers in a relaxed atmosphere, where everyone will create a piece to take home.

“I am constantly inspired by seeing people overcome their fear of working in such a daunting medium, to the realisation of their ideas in a beautiful natural material.” Mr Lysaght told Yay Cork.

“I really believe that carving is for everyone, regardless of our age, ability, or background. Stone carving is probably one of the earliest human art forms and is part of our cultural heritage, from ogham stones to Newgrange, to church art. It’s an approach that gives us the ability to leave our mark in a gentle and considered way.”

How do I get involved?

There is a choice of two weekends, running from Friday evening on August 14th with full days on Saturday and Sunday 15th and 16th, or the evening of Friday, August 21st to Sunday, August 23rd.

The cost for the weekend, including all tools, materials, and a light lunch is €200, with a €10 booking fee if registering online. For more information about the weekends, please contact Tommy at 0872683762.

Bookings can also be made online at Eventbrite.ie.
