These Cork neighbours turned a dull corner into a community vegetable patch

It was a dull and disused patch of dirt.
With a little imagination and a lot of elbow grease, however, a group of Cork neighbours have turned a wasted space in their estate into their very own vegetable garden.
Eva Corbett from Carrigtwohill took to Twitter to share some images of the group’s progress and a few ‘before and after’ shots of the project, which is keeping everyone busy while the Covid-19 restrictions continue.
Painted stones show where each variety of veggie is planted, with tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and rocket planted so far.

Everyone was happy to lend a hand and the team got to work, transforming the space over a few days.
“My neighbour Sam and I came up with the idea and the neighbours really liked it and offered to help. It’s kinda snowballing.” Eva told Yay Cork.
“Sean helped cut wood, Paul helped top a tree to let in more light, Eoin helped power hose, John, Sam’s dad, and Ruarc, my son, also helped,”
The teacher and singer/songwriter is a dab hand at DIY gardening, having transformed her own back garden from empty space to tranquil outdoor haven on a shoestring budget.
Eva created her organic hideaway using bricks she found for free, slips, cuttings from other plants and low-cost supermarket finds.

Eva says her neighbours are delighted with the new addition to the estate and many of them were eager to chip in, building beds and planting seedlings. That means there’ll be plenty of hands to help with the harvesting too.
It’s community spirit at its very best.
