Coronavirus: These neighbours are showing the rest of us what community spirit looks like

By Yay Cork March 11, 2020March 11, 2020

This could be a lifeline to an elderly person.

A group of Galway neighbours put together a WhatsApp group and invited everyone living locally to join it in an effort to help support anyone ill or self-isolating due to coronavirus.

The considerate idea, shared by Elaine Naughton on Twitter, has received thousands of likes on social media, prompting others to start their own local initiatives in neighbourhoods around the country.

In these uncertain times with shelves emptying in supermarkets.. Faith in humanity restored! This just received from neighbours doing the rounds of the estate. The message, posted through the letterboxes of local homes, reads:

“Are you interested in providing and receiving support and help from your neighbours if any of us catch the virus?

For example, if you are self-isolating and need groceries, medication, fuel etc. or anything else brought to your house you can contact the WhatsApp group for support and help.”

ALONE, the charity that supports elderly people in Ireland, has opened a phone line for older people who have concerns or are facing difficulties relating to COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Open from 8am to 8pm daily, the number to call is 0818 222 024.

‘Join in, volunteer’

Meanwhile, Director of RTÉ TV Helen O’Rahilly started #Selfisolationhelp on Twitter, allowing users to pitch in with offers of help in their local communities.

Ireland, come on. Local communities are fabulous when they come together: tidy towns, clean beaches. We’re *all* worried & but there are those who need practical help. Join in, volunteer to shop/pick up meds for elderly/frail. #selfisolationhelp RT!
