Here’s the story with Met Éireann’s nationwide snow and ice warning

By Yay Cork February 25, 2020September 15, 2021

Take extra care on the roads this week.

As temperatures drop below normal averages for early spring, Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow – Snow/Ice warning for the entire country, in effect from 6am this morning until 9am on Wednesday, February 26th, 2020.

While we’re unlikely to be snowed under in the city, many parts of Cork on higher ground can expect snowfall overnight, especially on Wednesday.

“Wintry showers, mainly of hail and sleet, will become increasingly widespread during Tuesday leading to icy patches.” warns the national forecaster. “Some snow accumulations will also occur.”

Temperatures due to drop to -1C

According to forecasters today will be very cold and windy, with sunny spells and showers and daytime temperatures of between 4C and 8C:

“Some of the showers may be of hail, with a risk of sleet. There is also a risk of some snow showers, mainly over high ground. There is the risk of thunder also.

Bright but cold and blustery today with sunny spells and showers. The showers will have a wintry mix of hail and sleet, with some snow also, mainly over high ground. There is also a risk of thunder.

It will be very cold tonight, dropping to -1C with clear spells and further wintry showers early in the night leaving snow accumulations on hills and mountains.”

On Wednesday we can expect a bright day, with sunny spells and scattered showers of hail and sleet, with a continuing risk of snow showers, mainly over high ground. Motorists have been earned to take extra care while driving on Wednesday, when it will be very cold overnight countrywide, with sharp or severe frost and icy stretches.
