The Cork DAWG shelter is full to capacity after ‘busiest ever’ January

The problem is getting worse.
A Cork dog shelter has been forced to turn animals away after more abandoned dogs than ever were dumped on their doorstep this month.
Cork Dog Action Welfare (DAWG) has appealed to local animal lovers to help them rehome the dozens of dogs already in their care, from unwanted lurchers and labradoodles to French bulldogs, terriers and retriever/collies like Chico, pictured above.
“We expected January to be very busy and it’s busier than ever.” said a Cork DAWG spokesperson.
Foster families wanted
The charity, which works tirelessly to rehabilitate and rehome the city’s many abused and abandoned pets, is now only accepting emergency cases.
This means they are in desperate need of volunteers to take in animals to foster on a short-term basis until a suitable forever home can be found.
“We try our best not to say no, but we do ask finders to cooperate as best they can and hold a stray or a lost dog for a couple of days until we source space. We’re asking owners to hold onto the dog they want to surrender as long as possible while we try and home them via the web.” said Claudia Cashman.
“Injured dogs and emergency cases are never turned away so donations towards private kennels are always welcome and foster homes to suit the dogs are invaluable,” she added.
Here are three ways you can help:
1. Fostering: If you can commit to taking a dog into your home for a few weeks while Cork DAWG find it a forever home, fill out a fostering form here.
2. Adopt: Cork DAWG have more than 70 dogs already in their care – all of which deserve a loving home. Find out about adoption here.
3. Donate: Funds are as important as spaces, with over 70 dogs and puppies to look after, Cork DAWG’s vet bills are a constant challenge. Donate €4 by texting CDAWG to 50300. To donate a larger amount, visit the donations page here.
