As trendy as they are tasty, fermented foods have proven to be one of our favourite health kicks in years.

Ask any dedicated consumer of kombucha however and they’ll agree; all that immune-boosting goodness comes at a price.

The smart option is to get the right advice from the experts, then dive into some DIY. Now you can learn how to ferment your own foods and drinks at an upcoming workshop hosted by master fermenter, nutritionist and herbalist April Danann in Clonakilty.

The Introduction to Wild Fermentation & Gut Health Workshop takes place from 1pm-4.30pm on Tuesday March 26th.

The class (tickets €85, including lunch here) will cover how to ferment your own kombucha, apple cider vinegar and vegetables and there will also be a tutorial on how to bake your own crisp loaf of sourdough bread.

The best bit? You can get started on your own little fermented pantry the minute you get home; April takes the waiting out of the process by giving you your own SCOBY (it looks like a jellyfish and stands for ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’ – essential to the fermentation process), plus plenty of notes and recipes.

April will also give the group a primer on the role of fermented foods and drinks in digestion and how we’re following in the footsteps of our ancestors by incorporating them into our modern diets.
