It’s sticky out.
While proper sunshine is a rarity, Mother Nature is pulling a cruel prank on us by ensuring the Indian summer 2020 days in Cork are permanently dull but uncomfortably humid.
If you need some pep in your step while you go about your business, the only answer is iced coffee.
Here are five new ones to try this week:
1. SICILIAN DELIGHTS, MAGAZINE ROAD
This tiny café is one of the best-kept secrets in Cork.
“Our iced coffee is so strong that it wakes up the neighbours.” says owner Dario Di Giandomenico. Count us in.
If you feel like you deserve an extra treat, try the affogato; a scoop of vanilla ice cream drenched in a shot of espresso and don’t leave without a pistachio cannoli or a custard bombolini for later.
Find them on Facebook for daily menu updates.
2. GUSTO, WASHINGTON STREET
Pick your favourite caffeinated beverage, then add ice; at Gusto they’ll do you a frosty coffee, tea, chocolate or chai any which way you like it; dairy, no dairy, half fat, full fat; whatever you’re into.
Ours is an Iced Dark Chocolate Mocha (€3.50). The Flying Bacon sandwich makes a hearty lunch on-the-go too.
Walk in from 7am- 3pm or click and collect via the Gusto website here.
3. STONE VALLEY COFFEE ROASTERS, CLONAKILTY
An essential stop on any staycation or Sunday spin, Stonevalley Coffee Roasters on Ashe Street in Clon are easing the atmospheric pressure with ice-cold mochas and lattes. They’re open seven days a week too so you’ll never be caught short.
Grab a bag of their new ‘Baby You’re Crazy’ Costa Rican blend to take home.
Follow them on Facebook for updates.
4. MONTY’S CAFÉ, MIDLETON
Iced coffee season is in full swing in Midleton. Monty’s iced lattes, mochas, americanos and frappés can be made with a wide variety of alternative milks – just ask at the counter.
Obviously you’ll be needing a lemon and poppyseed scone too – freshly baked in-house daily.
More from Monty’s here.
5. CREPE CUISINE, BALLINCOLLIG REGIONAL PARK
Need some fuel for your stroll through the woods? Hit Crepe Cuisine in Ballincollig Regional Park for a Vanilla Iced Latte (€3.50) before you hit the trail.
Bring the kids and order one of their chopped Mars Bar, crushed biscuit and Hershey’s chocolate sauce crepes too so you can devour half of it while they’re distracted on the playground.
Check their opening hours on Facebook.
