5 exquisite little cakes to order from Cork’s artisan bakers

A little of what you fancy does you good.
That’s a piece of sage advice we roll out time and time again around here, especially when it comes to baked goods.
And in Cork, there’s plenty of opportunities to indulge – barely a week goes by when there isn’t a brand new confection to try, from homemade cruffins (that’s a cross between a buttery croissant and a muffin, in case you’re unfamiliar) on Barrack Street to cupcakes topped with locally grown flowers in Ballinspittle.
Here are five marvellous cakes to try this weekend:
1. The flower-topped cupcakes at DIVA BAKES
The chocolate cupcakes at Diva Boutique Bakery are a little mouthful of heaven as they are, but during these summer months you can get them topped with Howe Hill Farm edible flowers; grown without any chemicals whatsoever in Kilbrittain.
Pop them on a fancy plate and you’ve got a dinner party dessert sorted (if they last that long without being devoured).
Pick them up at the Diva takeaway window in Ballinspittle, open Saturdays (10am-5pm) and Sundays (11am until 5pm) or order online.

2. The Cruffins at ALCHEMY CORK
Head for Barrack Street early if you want to get your hands on a Cruffin. Flavours vary every day but the Lemon & Raspberry and the Dulce de Leche come highly recommended.
If they run out, go for a house donut.
Open Mon-Fri 8:30am-6pm, Sat- Sun 10am-6pm, Barrack Street, Cork

3. The Dessert Box at PRALINE PASTRY AND CHOCOLATE
Praline Pastry & Chocolate are based in the Mitchelstown Shopping Centre
If you’re looking for something fancy to serve after your burgers and ribs, order Praline’s BBQ Dessert Box, which contains eight pots of assorted mousses and cheesecakes (€27.50). They also do a fine selection of vegan and gluten-free celebration cakes (the French Apple Tart is a surefire winner).

4. The Jewish Apple Peach Cake at SONAS TRADING
Many a new customer has discovered Sonas Trading through the Neighbourfood delivery service during the lockdown. Head baker Pia’s recent addition of Carol Rubin’s Jewish Apple Peach Cake (perfumed with fresh peaches) is going down a treat – it’s vegan and utterly delicious.
“Whenever we adapt a recipe for our vegan friends we want to make sure that it stands up on its own, and this one does. We ate all the tester loaves in a day!” says Pia. The salted peanut butter cookies are a solid 10/10 and try the Malaysian milk bread too.
