It’s a dog’s life in West Cork.
With endless beaches for strolling and spectacular countryside for sniffing, it would be tricky to find a better spot for a holiday with your canine companion.
And now there’s another reason to book a West Cork staycation; visiting dog lovers say it’s also home to one of the country’s most dog-friendly B&Bs.
Located in Durrus on the beautiful Sheepshead Peninsula, right on the Wild Atlantic Way, Carbery Cottage Guest Lodge is owned by dog trainer Mike Hegarty and artist Julia Bird.
There are four rooms and a one-bedroom self-catering cottage, The Swallow’s Roost, available, with views of Dunmanus Bay and Mizen Head for humans to savour.
As well as a friendly welcome, your furry friend will enjoy access to a 60-metre dog play area and agility course so they can stretch their legs to their heart’s content.
Afterwards you can unwind with an alfresco drink in the garden bar. It’s doggo holiday heaven so it’s no wonder the reviews from dog lovers are glowing:
“Our dog Woodley is reactive/nervous with other dogs and both Julia and Mike made sure that he was comfortable during our stay.” said recent guest Rebecca C, posting on Tripadvisor.
“The secure agility course was amazing to play fetch in the mornings and evenings to tire him out. The secure patio just off our room was perfect for Woodley to chill out in as he loves being outside.”
“We are just delighted with our stay.” wrote Anna B, who stayed in August. “Such great hosts, lovely breakfast but the most important is the love for dogs, for accepting them, for loving them, for building even a dog run. Our dog is just so delighted, he even found his summer crush – thank you very much for having us and we definitely will be back.”
Unlike many Airbnb options, there’s no size limit for dogs so whether your holiday buddy is a mini sausage dog or a Great Dane, you’ll be warmly welcomed.
“We offer dog-friendly accommodation without breed, size, or number restrictions,” said Mike and Julia.
There are ducks, chickens, a goose, and ponies within the grounds too so ensure your canine companion is on a leash as you explore.
Carbery Cottage is open for three-night minimum stays. Email Carberycottage@gmail.com for more details.
