Watch a silent movie from 1929 with live music on a gorgeous Steinway piano

And now for something completely different.
Triskel Arts Centre is helping Dublin International Film Festival bring part of their festival to the real capital this weekend as they partner on a special screening of a silent film featuring live accompaniment on their gorgeous Steinway C Grand piano.
The film, Chemi Bebia, will be accompanied by Meg Morley, one of the UK’s pre-eminent silent films accompanists at Triskel on South Main Street, Cork City on Sunday March 2nd at 7.30pm.

Chemi Bebia, an hilarious no-holds-barred Georgian satire, was made in the Soviet Union in 1929. A gloriously imaginative firework of a film, banned for almost 50 years, this silent film was recently restored and screened at the 2024 edition of Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna.
In it, a hopelessly lazy paper-pusher tries to get his job back to avoid the wrath of his wife, by looking for a ‘grandmother’ – an influential bureaucrat who can provide a recommendation letter.
“Mikaberidze’s masterpiece exposes the alienation of the modern workspace and is as relevant today as it was in 1929.” says Chris O’Neill, Head of Cinema at Triskel,
“For us, it’s a perfect mix of arthouse cinema and live music, particularly with Meg Morley providing the accompaniment.”
Tickets, from €12.50, are on sale now here.
