This group of Cork bakers sends free birthday cakes to people who can’t afford one

Remember blowing out the candles on your birthday cake?
Most of us have fond memories of those special family moments, but if you’re homeless or money is tight, a birthday is often just another milestone you can’t afford to celebrate.
Now a group of Cork bakers have joined forces to make sure nobody misses out on those memories.
Consider It Cakes provide free birthday cakes for people who are currently in a situation where they cannot buy a cake or don’t have the facilities to bake one, such as families living in temporary homeless accommodation and Direct Provision Centres.

The idea was started by Franciska Acs and her partner, Corkman Darragh Kiely, in Dublin, who reached out on social media to find volunteers to take up the challenge in Cork.
Incredibly, 30 kind-hearted home bakers answered the call and the group has already delivered birthday caramel and lemon drizzle surprises to happy recipients in Direct Provision here. Children also get a small wrapped present for their birthday to ensure that the big day is celebrated.
“I think it’s so important to be able to celebrate a birthday with a cake made with love.” one of the Cork volunteers, Dawn Steacy, told Yay Cork.

“When I was a child, my mum made everyone in my family birthday cakes in whatever flavour we wanted. I think all the volunteer bakers feel that everyone deserves that experience of having a beautiful birthday cake.”
