The largest ever Dalí sculpture to be displayed in Ireland just landed at this Cork hotel

By Yay Cork May 20, 2024May 20, 2024

It’s valued at a whopping €1.1m.

The largest Dalí sculpture ever to be displayed in Ireland was unveiled at a luxury hotel in East Cork today.

Dance of Time II, which will feature at Art and Soul at Cork’s Castlemartyr Resort, is a 405kg, 1.5m high bronze sculpture showcasing Dalí’s enduring melting clocks motif.

Oliver Gormley, left, of Gormleys, watches with Simon Hayes as Dance of Time II, the largest Salvador Dalí sculpture ever displayed in Ireland, arrives at Castlemartyr Resort. Picture: Elaine O’Halloran.

The flamboyant artist, Spanish by birth, left an undeniable mark on the Surrealist movement. Dali’s dream-like paintings are instantly recognisable and his artistic virtuosity was matched by an eccentric personality, ensuring his place as a pop culture icon as much as a Surrealist master.

“The melted clock is the most well-known and beloved of Dalí’s iconoclastic images, and he chose to portray this consistently throughout his lifetime,” said Oliver Gormley of Gormleys.

“The ever-present fluidity of time is represented in this sculpture as time not only moving, but dancing in rhythm to the beat of the universe.

“Dalínian time is perpetual and dances on, stopping for no man, history or even the cosmos.”

The event will showcase €8 million worth of works by the biggest names in international and Irish art.
