The Glanmire maths grinds class that’s now helping over 1,000 students weekly

Brought to you by Breakthrough Maths.
It’s a subject that’s a source of anxiety for many.
If you’re the parent of a child struggling with maths, you’ll be familiar with a certain sinking feeling: the pressure of exams, the tears over homework.
For years, traditional grinds were the only option but they can be expensive, inconvenient, and often too fast-paced for kids who just need a little more time.
Now, Breakthrough Maths is changing the game. Founded during lockdown by TJ Hegarty in a small Glanmire hall, this online grinds school has grown from eight students to over 1,000 weekly— and for good reason.

“I really struggled with maths in school. I hated being lectured to – I was lost in class.” TJ told us.
“I worked hard and achieved 600 points in my own leaving cert by force of will. I started to teach maths grinds after that while in college. In 2020, I set up Breakthrough Maths to help others solve the problems I had experienced in school.
“Maths is a skill. Our platform are built off years of research to make learning maths effective. It’s my mission to build something that can impact every student at home in Ireland.”
‘My daughter’s confidence is soaring’
Take Holly from Achill Island. For her family, finding a local maths tutor was next to impossible. Now, she logs into live, interactive classes from the comfort of her home—no long drives, no compromises. Or James, a Munster Rugby Academy player juggling a packed training schedule. With four live classes a week, he jumps in and out when it suits him, keeping up with his maths while chasing his sporting dreams.
The secret? Focus and flexibility. Breakthrough Maths teaches only maths—so every tutor is a subject expert. Live classes go slower, giving struggling students the time and attention they need to actually get it. No more zoning out; students stay engaged, ask questions, and hear it explained step by step until the penny drops.
“Maths felt impossible,” says one student’s mum. “But now my daughter’s confidence is soaring. She even asks to do extra problems!”
Parents love the online format—no travel, no hassle—but kids love the tutors.
“I tell them to be circus performers,” says TJ. “Keeping students focused is the main thing”
