Storm Amy: Worst of the rain expected in West Cork as Status Yellow alert kicks in

By Yay Cork October 2, 2025

A Status Yellow rainfall warning is in place.

Cork County Council is urging motorists to drive with care over the coming days as heavy rain and strong winds are forecast before the first storm of the season, Storm Amy, lands on Friday.

A Met Éireann Status Yellow rainfall warning will be in place from 6.00am to 8.00pm today, Thursday, October 2nd with widespread, heavy rain leading to localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions. The worst of the rain is expected in West Cork.

Cork County Council is asking road users to exercise caution as driving conditions may be hazardous, with surface water flooding possible. Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flowing or standing water and to exercise caution during heavy rain and are asked to be conscious of cyclists and pedestrians.

The rain warning will be followed by a Status Yellow wind warning on Friday, which comes into force from midday. Strong to near gale force winds and gusty south-westerly winds are forecast until midnight on Friday. The potential impacts include difficult travelling conditions, debris, loose objects displaced and some fallen trees possible.

“Strong winds can make driving conditions hazardous, especially for the more vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and high sided vehicles. Road users should pay particular attention to the risk posed by fallen trees and flying debris.” the County Council said in a statement.

“Forecasted conditions may give rise to localised power outages. In the event of disruption to power supply, please contact ESB Networks at 1800 372 999. In the event of disruption to water supply, please contact Uisce Éireann at 1800 278 278.”

Issues such as flooding and road damage can be reported to Cork County Council’s emergency number 021 4800048 which will remain open until 9am on Friday morning. Call 999 or 112 and request the Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Gardaí or Irish Coastguard as appropriate.
