Some of Cork’s best kept foodie secrets feature in a new US travel documentary

By Yay Cork July 17, 2023July 17, 2023

It might inspire a weekend adventure.

Some of Cork’s best food producers are featured in a new US YouTube series documenting Ireland’s thriving food culture.

Tourism Ireland in the United States teamed up with Huckberry, a major outdoor clothing and lifestyle brand, for an episode of its popular documentary travel series DIRT. The episode highlights the island of Ireland’s outdoor adventure experiences, food, and drink.

“For DIRT’s first trip across the pond, host Josh Rosen dove head first into Ireland.” said the producers.

“From long-held traditions to the modern-day artisanal movement, he unearthed the multicultural goldmine between the highlands and the Wild Atlantic Way—with stops for surfing, a seaweed bath, and a couple holes of golf spectated by free-range goats, of course.”

In this neck of the woods, the team caught up with cheesemaker, meat smoker and knife maker Fingal Ferguson and his family on Gubbeen Farm near Schull.

Ferguson gave the presenter a crash course in how one of Cork’s most delicious cheeses is made.

Later the team visited Sally Barnes in the famous Woodcock Smokery, and met sea kayakers and foragers Maria and Jim Kennedy in Castlehaven Bay to hunt for seaweed.

They also enjoyed the sauna and a dip in the sea at Reen Pier, a small but picturesque harbour on the rugged coastline between the towns of Union Hall and Glandore.

The episode culminates with a feast of the fantastic produce and ingredients collected by Josh on his travels around Ireland and prepared by chef Keith Coleman.

Where can I watch it?

The first episode “rooted in community, homegrown ingredients, and the damn good people who bring it all together” is available now.

Tourism Ireland has prioritised the United States as a market that offers a strong return on investment, in terms of holiday visitors and expenditure.

In 2019, we welcomed 1.7 million American visitors, whose visits delivered €1.6 billion to the economy.
