Met Éireann says a drop in winds will bring freezing fog as temps dip as low as -8C

It’s bitterly cold out there today.
And with the Status Yellow warning now shifting to a Status Orange alert in Munster right up until Thursday, forecasters are predicting we’re in for yet more icy weather in Cork as an Arctic airmass dominates this week.
According to Met Éireann, winds will drop off today Tuesday, January 7th and Wednesday, January 8th, allowing fog and freezing fog to form, which may linger in some areas through the day.

Daytime temperatures will struggle to rise above zero in many areas, meaning little to no respite from the frost and ice or melt of lying snow.
Cork County Council is reporting that significant progress has been made in clearing priority routes in north-west, north and mid Cork, where 25 snow ploughs and salters are in operation as well as other Council vehicles and crews.
⚠️Cork County Council’s Crisis Management Team convened again this evening as Status Yellow Snow-Ice warnings remain in place for the county until midday tomorrow.

The majority of primary routes are passable with care, although the R579 Banteer to Nadd remains closed due to a combination of fallen trees and snow accumulations.
‘Really dangerous conditions’
“Given there has been a lot of snow over the weekend, as well as rain which has now frozen, there will be really dangerous conditions on the roads.” explains Met Éireann’s Deputy Head of Forecasting Liz Coleman.
“The icy conditions will be particularly impactful for some road users, such as cyclists and motorcyclists, so alternative travel should be considered if possible.
“Really slippery on footpaths too so tricky conditions underfoot. We’d ask the public give extra time for any travel that they have to make.”
