Felt like January would never end?
Well, surprise! It has! And in our book, that calls for a little celebration.
February is here, spring is around the corner and if there’s one affordable little treat that’s guaranteed to turn your frown upside down, it’s a very, very good pastry.
Ever in your service, we’ve tracked down just the confection. The Grumpy Bakers’ Dolce de Leche Kouign Amann is the little slab of sugar-dusted happiness you deserve today.
The gorgeous laminated pastry is topped with The Grumpy Bakers’ homemade dolce de leche caramel and sprinkled with roasted hazelnuts.
If you like a bit of background with your bold elevenses, the specialty bake hails from the town of Douarnenez in Finistère, Brittany where it originated around 1860.

The name comes from the Breton words for ‘cake’ (kouign) and ‘butter’ (amann).
In 2011 the New York Times described the kouign-amann as “the fattiest pastry in all of Europe”, which makes sense because the original recipe requires a ratio of 30 percent butter, 30 percent sugar, and 40 percent dough.
It also explains why you’ll be pining for it long after you’ve devoured the last crumb.
The Grumpy Bakers are open Wednesday to Sunday on Washington Street in Cork City and Midleton. Get in early to avoid disappointment.
