Hey, who’s behind that brand new mural underway on Perry Street?

You may have seen its beginnings.
Stroll down Perry Street this week and you’ll be one of the first to check out Cork’s newest large-scale mural.
The piece is the work of David Shillinglaw, one of the artists in residence for the landmark 10th anniversary edition of Sounds from a Safe Harbour (SFSH), which returns to Cork City from September 11th to 14th, 2025.

Shillinglaw, who creates vibrant and eclectic artwork, which spans various mediums including painting, murals, and installations, will be creating his next piece on the facade of the Bakestone building on Perry Street throughout the week. The paint has kindly been supplied by the fine folks at Pat McDonnell Paints.
David’s work explores themes of identity, the complexities of the human condition and the languages we use to describe our experiences.
“Shillinglaw’s practice is characterised by a playful yet thoughtful approach, employing a collage-like aesthetic, his art is both introspective and outward-looking, inviting viewers to reflect on personal and collective narratives.” the SFSH crew told us.

“As part of his residency at the Festival, David will begin work on a new large-scale mural at Bakestone, Perry Street, Cork City, starting Monday, 8th September. In addition to the mural, he has also collaborated on the creation of this year’s SFSH25 visual identity and branding, bringing his unique style to the heart of the festival.”
