Frankie’s ’70s inspired slice shop opens at 1pm Friday (until all the pizza is gone)

They officially open on Friday at 1pm.
But a soft launch of Frankie’s, a 1970s-inspired New York-style pizza slice shop in the glass kiosk on the South Mall boardwalk has Cork pizza fans singing the praises of their delicious pies.
The latest venture by Elio Tavolieri, who has been running pizzerias in the city for almost 20 years, Paul Harty, and chef Francesco Ascenzi, the team behind Palmento in Douglas, the project has been two years in the making.

“With Palmento we have always stuck closely to Neapolitan traditions,” Harty told Yay Cork.
“With Frankie’s, we didn’t want to be bound by any particular convention or style, we intend to try all different types of slices and combinations. See what people are enjoying and try to have a bit of fun with it.”
The location was key to the vibe:
“We’ve always loved the idea of this location. There’s a real city buzz in that area and is quite young with a strong mix of international city residents. This makes it ideal for a grab-and-go style offering. The 360-degree glass walls allow people to have a look at the process in full motion as well, which is something that both we and the customers like.

“We have a lot of outdoor seating available on the boardwalk also for people to relax and enjoy a slice in the sunshine (hopefully).”
The menu is changing on a daily basis so this weekend’s hungry visitors will be among the first to try some future classics at Frankie’s.
“For the soft launch last weekend, our Roman style squares with nduja, stracciatella and hot honey were the all-round favourite.” adds Harty.
Word has it the team is already eyeing a second location for early next year.
