FOR SALE: This unique Blackrock home is a time capsule from 1964

Architecturally speaking, it’s a rare gem.
A home in a rare Miesian development of 36 townhouses arranged around two neat courtyards in Blackrock has hit the market guiding at €330,000.
Miesian is a term used to describe architecture built in the style of the vastly influential 20th Century German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who took a ‘less is more’ attitude to design and pioneered the use of modern building materials such as glass and steel.
No. 24 Dundanion Court, a four-bed terraced home designed by award-winning architect Neil Hegarty who was awarded the RIAI silver medal for housing for his work on the development, boasts many of its original features, making it a real find for fans of modern architecture.
According to a history of the development, published here, “Dundanion was designed to be high-quality housing for a new generation of professional and business people, adopting new technologies and approaches, and being fitted out with natural and often expensive materials.
The aluminium horizontal sliding windows were imported from the US, with polished cast aluminium handles used on doors: “Many things were the best of their kind and also the first of their kind in the country. Options were given to residents in the fit-out, and sliding wardrobes, kitchens and built-in furniture were constructed by the firm’s joinery shops.”
Top-quality fit-out
“A high-quality hardwood was chosen for internal joinery; cedar was used for external cladding and for internal ceilings; white Carrara marble slabs were inset into kitchen worktops and a significantly large polished dark Irish limestone mantle shelf was installed.
Inside the living room is open plan and still features the original tile flooring, as well as the beautiful Irish limestone mantle.
There’s a galley style kitchen, an island unit with storage and stainless steel sink unit, electric hob, double oven, dishwasher and washer/drier. The floor is tiled and there’s a door leading to the shared courtyard.
Upstairs there are four bedrooms, with timber floors and an ensuite in the master. In typical 60s style, the bathroom is carpeted, which is one retro feature you might not mind letting go of.
“Blackrock Village itself is a bustling village with river walks, plentiful bars, restaurants and cafes.” say agents, Hegarty Properties.
“It is also just a short 10-minute drive from Mahon Point Shopping centre and within walking distance of several national and secondary schools.”
