Everything we know about The South Gate, Cork’s newest bar and restaurant

By Katie Mythen-Lynch March 3, 2026

Add a new stop to your Paddy’s Day party plans.

There’s a new name set to light up one of Cork’s best-known city centre buildings — and while details are still being kept under wraps, here’s everything we know so far about The South Gate.

Taking over the former Flying Enterprise bar and complex on Barrack Street, the property is undergoing a major rebrand that promises a fresh new look and a completely reimagined experience. The venue will include the much-loved courtyard at the back, alongside a brand-new upstairs restaurant space — adding a whole new dimension to the landmark building.

Behind the project are the team responsible for Royal Palace and Pearl River, two long-standing favourites on Cork’s dining scene.

The interiors are mid-revamp, ready for the big reveal later this month.

We’re told they’ve assembled an impressive new team for this venture too — including the former head chef of Greenes Restaurant Nicolas Alegre, who brings over two decades of global culinary expertise, having worked across Europe, Latin America, and New Zealand.

While the full menu and exact opening date haven’t yet been revealed, customers can expect great food, standout service and a polished new atmosphere designed to suit everything from casual catch-ups to big celebrations.

The aim? To become the go-to spot for all occasions in Cork. Keep an eye on their socials below for further updates and sneak peeks inside:

For now, plenty remains a mystery — but with experienced restaurateurs at the helm and a prime city location getting a serious glow-up, The South Gate is already shaping up to be one of the most talked-about openings of the year.
