Camping: it’s fun but it involves a lot of stuff.
If your ideal weekend away involves hopping in the car with little more than some supplies and a good pair of hiking boots, ‘glammocking’ could be for you.
A slightly more glamorous form of hammocking, glammocking involves sleeping in a cosy hammock suspended inside a large polytunnel.
Just 15 minutes outside Macroom, Bengour Glammocking is the ideal spot to test the water.
It’s not as mad as it sounds, essentially it’s alfresco living lite – all your everyday activities are enjoyed outdoors, while the tunnel provides extra cover in case the heavens open while you’re all tucked up in your hammock.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome (provided they don’t upset the livestock in the neighbouring fields) and there’s table tennis, a football field, a trampoline and friendly chickens on-site so if you’re not out exploring West Cork during the day there’s plenty to do.
Bring supplies to cook in the bush kitchen or barbecue and eat in the lovely rustic greenhouse (above), whatever the weather.
You won’t be completely roughing it either; the shared bush bathroom boasts a hot shower so you can wind down before hopping into your hammock bed at night and towels can be requested for a small fee if you’re travelling light.
There’s even a hot tub where you can soothe away any aches and pains from your hike and they also offer special sleeping bags and mosquito nets if you choose to level up and sleep outside.
The best bit? It’s a super affordable way to enjoy a weekend in the great outdoors – booking a hammock works out at around €23pp per night. You can check out the next available dates here.
