Dust off your inner Von Trapp as The Sound of Music lands on Leeside

There are two kinds of people in the world.
Those who can hear the opening notes of “Do-Re-Mi” without reacting… and those who immediately feel the uncontrollable urge to sing along.
If you fall firmly into the second category (and honestly, who doesn’t), there’s good news: Cork Opera House is bringing an all-new production of The Sound of Music to the stage this summer, running from July 23rd to August 16th.
Yes — the hills are very much coming alive, and Cork audiences are invited to join in.
Time to dust off your inner Von Trapp
Few musicals have the kind of cross-generational grip that The Sound of Music does. Whether you grew up watching it every Christmas or learned half your musical vocabulary from Maria spinning around the Alps, the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic remains one of the most beloved shows ever written.
This new production promises dazzling sets, colourful costumes and sweeping orchestration, bringing the famous story of Maria — the spirited governess who arrives at the Von Trapp household and turns a regimented family into a singing sensation — back to the Cork stage.
The show features a greatest-hits lineup of musical theatre classics, including “Do-Re-Mi”, “My Favourite Things”, “Edelweiss” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”. In other words, the kind of songs that make audiences suddenly realise halfway through that they know every single lyric.
There’s a reason this show has endured for decades: it’s pure, joyful escapism.
