It’s a step in the right direction.
Starting today, Munster Technological University (MTU) has banned disposable cups in canteens on all campuses including Bishopstown, MTU Cork School of Music and MTU Crawford College of Art & Design in Cork city; the National Maritime College of Ireland in Ringaskiddy, and MTU Kerry North and MTU Kerry South campuses in Tralee.
Disposable cups contribute significantly to environmental pollution as they are virtually impossible to recycle due to the combination of plastic and paper in their design.
By phasing out disposable cups, the university aims to minimise plastic waste, contributing to broader global efforts in the sustainable and responsible use of resources.
“This move to reusable cups is a positive step forward in MTU’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental leadership.” said Professor Maggie Cusack, President of MTU.
“By implementing this initiative, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also instilling a sense of responsibility and awareness among our university community.”
As an alternative to disposable cups, staff and students are encouraged to use their own reusable cups and will also have the option to purchase a reusable cup at campus canteens for a refundable €2 deposit.
