Some of the best businesses do one thing really well.
And if you find yourself on Leeside with a hankering for a savoury pie with mash and gravy, there’s only one place to go; Cork’s only dedicated pie shop.
Freshly installed at the buzzing Black Market on Monahan Road, The Pie Guys, baker Jamie Kelly, and marketing specialist Tim O’Kennedy, have launched a capsule menu starring what they consider to be “the perfect all-butter pastry” to hold their decadent fillings.
It’s a bolshy claim, but their story checks out.

In fact, you may have tasted some of Jamie’s creations before when he manned the ovens at the ever-popular Diva Bakery in Ballinspittle, churning out their famous bread, sandwich rolls, soups, and sausage rolls.
This time, Jamie and Tim are laser-focused on the pastry.
“The idea for The Pie Guys came about earlier this year following a chance conversation about our love of pies and how it’s very difficult to find a good one in this neck of the woods,” Jamie told us.
“We’ve worked hard at developing what we consider to be the perfect all-butter pastry to hold our decadent fillings using the very best produce we can find. These pies are far from ordinary.”
The menu for the opening weekend was a simple affair consisting of three pies, each served as a meal; €12 buys you a pie of your choice, 70/30 mash (70 percent potato, 30 percent butter, FYI), buttermilk ‘slaw (coleslaw made with a buttermilk ranch style dressing) and a house pickle.
The flavours are Beef and Beamish, Irish Dexter Beef braised in a rich Beamish gravy, Creamy Chicken Tarragon, free-range chicken in a creamy bechamel with a hint of tarragon, and Potato, leek, and Gruyère; layers of baby potato, sautéed leek, and gooey gruyère.
Slather on some mushroom gravy for €2 if you’re feeling saucy. You can even grab a non-alcoholic beer to complete the pie experience.
The Pie Guys open Wednesday to Sunday 12pm -8pm at The Black Market, Monahan Road, Cork.
