CORK WEATHER: Dull, wet and breezy to start the week with heavy rain on the way

The January drizzle is here to stay.
As Cork wakes up to a dull, wet and breezy morning commute, Monday looks set to bring outbreaks of rain, heavy at times.
“A clearance will develop in the west of the region this afternoon with the rain giving way to sunny spells and the occasional shower, but it’ll remain rather dull and damp further to the east.” said a Met Éireann forecaster.
“Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in moderate to fresh, occasionally strong, and gusty, southeasterly winds easing light southwest or variable this afternoon.”
Tonight will start off mainly dry for many areas, with a mix of cloud and some clear breaks. Mist and fog will develop in places, and where skies clear early on, temperatures could dip close to freezing, falling to between 0 and 3 degrees.
As the night goes on though, rain will spread in and become widespread, turning heavy at times. Winds will also pick up, becoming easterly and fresh to strong by morning, with coastal gales developing.
Low presssure here to stay
Tuesday will get off to a wet and windy start, with rain clearing northwards during the morning to leave brighter spells and scattered showers. Any improvement will be short-lived, however, as further spells of rain push up from the south later in the morning and through the afternoon. Daytime highs will range from 6 to 9 degrees.
Looking further ahead, the unsettled theme continues. Tuesday night will remain wet and windy at first, before winds ease and showers become more scattered with some clear breaks developing. Wednesday through to Friday looks changeable and mostly cloudy, with further showers or longer spells of rain feeding up from the south. Temperatures will stay on the cool side, generally between 6 and 10 degrees.
There’s little sign of improvement heading into the weekend either, with low pressure set to dominate.
