Cannabis picnic protest event scheduled to take place in Cork this Saturday

The organiser has encouraged attendees to bring their own “herb.”

Cannabis reform activists are planning to hold a picnic protest in Mardyke Skate Park this Saturday between 2pm and 6pm. The goal of the group is cannabis legalisation and access to medicinal cannabis for those with relevant medical conditions.

The Facebook page for the event reads: “On the 7th of August we are calling on everyone who agrees that cannabis should be legalised and regulated in Ireland to join us for a picnic in the park.

“This is a civil disobedience protest and we are encouraging everyone to bring their own cannabis if they are consumers of the herb.

“Civil disobedience is an important part of a democratic country because it is one of the driving factors that allow individuals to exercise their rights to free speech and speak up against an unfair and unjust government and its laws.

“The Irish Government has ignored our calls for cannabis legalisation over the last few years and as a results many patients are without effective access to this plants and the therapeutic compounds within it.”

While the event poster specifies that there is to be no selling of the drug during the protest, it is important to note that possession of cannabis remains illegal, and so bringing your own cannabis to the protest would result in potential legal jeopardy.

As of Thursday morning, 41 people have confirmed their attendance on the Facebook event page.

Organiser Martin Condon was in the news last month when he planted several cannabis plants next to Shandon Bridge, near Bridewell Garda station.
