Ireland’s housing crisis is worsening by the day.
Now a national organisation is calling on Cork people to join them in a Cork Rally for Housing this weekend on the Grand Parade.
As the price of the average home in Cork creeps past €300,000, the local branch of the National Homeless and Housing Coalition is hosting the event on Saturday, April 30th, 2022 at 1pm.
“We’re calling everyone to join together in a united show of solidarity to demand urgent action on the housing and homeless emergency.” said a spokesperson for the group.
“The government allows the housing market to be a place where huge profits are made for the few while most of us are bled dry. Their inept policies and inaction has condemned whole generations to a lifetime of high rent with no chance of ever owning a home and at worst a life of housing insecurity and homelessness.
“Runaway rental rises mean this country is one of the most expensive in Europe in which to rent a home.”
The group is demanding a national referendum on a constitutional right to housing.
“We call for public housing to be built on public land, an end to dereliction, evictions, and sell-offs to vulture funds.” they added.
