A respected pints reviewer has proclaimed this Cork pub the best for stout

By Katie Mythen-Lynch January 19, 2026

It’s a tough job but someone’s gotta do it.

A popular UK food and drinks blogger spent a busy weekend in Cork, sampling the stout at some of the city’s most beloved bars.

YouTuber Jason Hackett, also known as Primemutton, treated his 200,000 fans (the ‘muttonistas’) to a whirlwind tour of Leeside watering holes, meeting his fans at The Franciscan Well on the North Mall, The Fountain Bar on Oliver Plunkett Street, O’Sho on Barrack Street, and Callanan’s on George’s Quay.

Sadly, his favourite local tipple at The Franciscan Well, Shandon Stout, is about to be discontinued by Molson Coors.

He also hit The Welcome Inn, The Oval, Fordes, The Crane Lane, The Castle Inn, The Gables, The South County in Douglas and the Cork Airport bar in the departure lounge, stopping for sustenance at Ballycotton Seafood in the English Market.

On this visit, Mr Hackett, whose international fans include celebrities such as actor Paul Giamatti, gave top honours to Callanan’s, where he said he enjoyed what he considered to be “the best Beamish and Murphy’s Stout that I’ve ever had.”

“It’s not my first visit here at Callanan’s and I can confirm that the quality is consistent. It’s not a huge bar but I can confirm that we all fitted in nicely and drank those pints of Beamish and Murphy’s into form. Not just Absolute Creamers but Creamerissimo pints Muttonistas!” he added.

A fine excuse for a trip to Callanan’s later this week if ever there was one.
