A local business has offered to replace Mahon’s fallen monkey puzzle tree

This is a lovely gesture.
A local credit union has offered to replace Mahon’s 175-year-old monkey puzzle tree after Storm Ellen brought it crashing down last night.
St. Michael’s Credit Union on the Skehard Road has announced it is “engaging with the correct local bodies to have the tree replaced as soon as possible”.
It might take a century or so for it to grow as tall as its predecessor, but it’s the thought that counts.
“St. Michael’s Credit Union are committed to helping in replacing this landmark tree which was planted by William H. Crawford around 1845.
“The tree has been enjoyed by people locally since it was planted and has been a beautiful sight for people travelling by on the link.” the credit union said in a statement.
We were saddened to see the collapse of the iconic monkey puzzle tree in last night. It was here since around 1845!
St. Michael’s Credit Union would like to play our part & are committed to help in replacing it.

“The tree was part of the local history and heritage, it would be a shame if future generations didn’t have a chance to enjoy another monkey puzzle tree.”
Meanwhile, locals are hoping the wood from the fallen tree, often referred to by children as the ‘broccoli tree’ will be used to create a sculpture for the site where it stood. Other suggestions include using the wood to create pieces of art for public walkways in the area.
