A haunting new city exhibition captures the spooky SMELLS of Spike Island

History stinks.
A groundbreaking new exhibition in Fitzgerald’s Park is using scent to create a multi-sensory experience that will leave visitors both captivated and chilled.
‘All That Remains’ is an exhibition by LaveryRing, the artistic collaboration of Liam Lavery and Eithne Ring, marking the culmination of their residency on Spike Island over the summer.

This exhibition in The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion, Fitzgerald’s Park, delves into themes of incarceration, crime, punishment, displacement and resistance.
“Spike Island, with its haunting architecture and layered history, provided the perfect setting for this exploration.” say the artists.
“The lingering aromas within its prison walls, built up over centuries, serve as our artistic medium, telling stories of poverty, isolation, and injustice—parallels that extend to current global conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, and beyond.”

The exhibition is designed to be an immersive sensory experience, using scent as a primary tool.
“Olfactory elements are woven together with installations, sculptures, and printmaking, creating a multi-sensory narrative that mirrors the human experiences within the confines of Spike Island,” they added.
“While this project marks a shift from our typical public art practice, it remains deeply connected through its focus on history, social justice and storytelling.”
You can check out All That Remains for free from October 17th until November 2nd, 2024 from Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 4pm.
