A fascinating talk will profile Cork’s Dr Barter, the pioneer of Turkish baths in Ireland

We’re obsessed with water-based therapies on Leeside.
But our fascination with using water to boost health and feel better (hello sauna/cold plunge combo) stretches further back into Cork’s history.
Now you can find out all about Cork doctor, Dr Richard Barter, known as the pioneer of Turkish baths in Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century, at a free talk as part of National Heritage Week later this month.

Tower Community Association (TCA) and Hydro Farm Allotments are inviting the public to celebrate the rich history and vibrant community of St. Ann’s Hill Hydro during the event at the allotments, located between Tower and Blarney villages, on Saturday, August 24th, 2024, starting at 11:30am.
This year’s Heritage Week will feature an array of exhibitions, talks, and activities that highlight the fascinating history of St. Ann’s Hill Hydro and its impact on the local community, and the unique influence on medical treatments at home and abroad due to its position as being the founding institution of Turkish Baths in Western Europe.
At its peak, the Hydro boasted 80 bedrooms spread across multiple buildings. Residential patients flocked from far and wide, seeking respite from a variety of ailments.

Dr. Charlene Barter, a descendant of the founder Dr. Richard Barter, will return to Cork to officially open the celebrations at noon on the day.
Attendees will have the opportunity to view historical artefacts from the Hydro, including medical instruments, the original face of the clock tower, silverware, and other memorabilia.
Assoc. Prof. Ronan Foley from NUI Maynooth will present a talk on The Global Spread of Dr. Barter’s Baths.
Parking is available on-site ( T23NNX2 will get you there) and tea, coffee, and light snacks will be available for purchase.
