A delightful (and affordable) hidden city tapas spot to add to your list

Locals have been keeping this one to themselves.
But if you’re looking for an unpretentious, authentic spot to eat al fresco (where you won’t risk a panic attack when you get the bill) you’ll find it up in Sunday’s Well.
Tucked away at No. 85A Sundays Well Road, hiding behind a deceptively unassuming facade, is Farol, meaning ‘lighthouse’; a little slice of Mediterranean magic serving a collection of Portuguese and international dishes, all lovingly homemade.

Open for a year now, Farol serves brunch and dinner, tapas, pinchos and wine, with coffees and mouthwatering fresh cakes and tarts on the go also. It’s a popular spot among Portugese expats looking for a taste of home in Cork and weekend wine fans who rave about the generous pour, a rarity in town.
They do a hefty toasted sambos (€6.95), a very good Bifana (a Portuguese pork sandwich on a soft roll – €7.95)) delicious soups (a bargain at €5.95) and a choice of interesting mains including Pataniscas de Bacalhau, a classic Portuguese cod fritter dish, and large sharing boards.
Staff have a reputation for being extremely welcoming, with many diners saying they were greeted like an old friend. Plus they show football on a big screen so you can catch a match over a bite to eat.

“It’s crazy value too.” said one delighted customer on Reddit.
“I’ve had soup with bread, sandwich with a side salad, whole bowl of olives and a coffee, and paid €16.50!”
